LIV Golf Pays a Million Bucks to Prove "Stinger" Isn't Just for Tees

Well, this is rich. LIV Golf, the league with more drama than a daytime soap opera, has just shelled out a cool million dollars to a golf tee company. Yes, you read that right. A million. To settle a dispute with Stinger Golf of Ohio, who apparently felt LIV’s team name, Stinger GC, was a bit too close for comfort. I imagine the folks at Stinger Golf are now polishing their trophies and wondering if they should start a new league called "The Driver's Ed School of Golf."

It all started when LIV decided to name a team Stinger GC. Now, Stinger Golf, the tee people, have been around for ages, churning out enough tees to build a small wooden city. They looked at LIV's shiny new team and thought, "Hang on a minute, that sounds suspiciously like our brand!" Their lawyers, likely fueled by strong coffee and the sheer audacity of it all, demanded a cool $100 million. A hundred million! For a name. I've heard of overpaying for a golf cart, but this is something else.

But, as usually happens when you've got that much money flying around, cooler heads (or perhaps just less greedy heads) prevailed. The LIV team, now called Southern Guards GC and captained by Louis Oosthuizen, decided a million was a more palatable number. They’ve also decided to embrace rhinos, which, let's be honest, are way more intimidating than any golf tee. I just hope the rhinos are getting a cut of the naming rights.

The core of Stinger Golf’s argument was that LIV knew about their trademark all along. This makes LIV look less like a groundbreaking sports venture and more like a kid who "borrows" his older sibling's favorite toy without asking. The fact that LIV’s own trademark applications for "Stinger GC" were later dropped just adds to the whole delightful mess. It’s like trying to trademark the color blue after everyone’s already using it.

And here’s the kicker: Stinger Golf apparently agreed to the million-dollar settlement partly because they were worried LIV might go belly-up. Imagine that – suing a company that might not be around long enough to pay you. It's a classic golfer's dilemma, really: do you chase that impossible shot into the woods, or do you take the easier, shorter putt? In this case, they took the million and ran, probably before LIV’s financial architect drew up plans for a "Gimmick Golf Ball" team.

This whole saga is just another chapter in LIV's ongoing legal adventures. Between this tee dispute and other lawsuits about unpaid bills, it seems building a new golf empire is proving to be about as smooth as a links course in November. You have to wonder if the whole operation needs a serious overhaul, or at least fewer lawyers who moonlight as comedians.
