Well, it finally happened. John Daly is hooking up with Topgolf. Apparently, the man who once shot a 60 at the Masters thinks smashing balls into a field is the next logical step. The press release calls it a 'home run.' I call it Tuesday.
This multi-year deal means Daly will be showing up at various Topgolf locations, presumably to sign autographs and question why nobody's wearing cargo shorts. He's also lending his 'energy' to branded content. So, expect more of that signature John Daly flair, which usually involves a loud shirt and a distinct lack of concern for convention. We'll also see the return of 'Topgolf Nights,' which I assume are just regular Topgolf Nights, but now with more potential for a rogue 1-iron swing from a drunk uncle.
The Topgolf CEO thinks Daly is a 'one-of-a-kind icon who completely disrupted this sport.' Disrupted? He hit it far and wore bright colors. Revolutionary. Topgolf, apparently, wants to 'break down barriers.' Their barrier is charging $25 an hour to hit balls into a net. Daly's barrier is usually the concession stand.
Daly himself stated it's 'a place where you can smash a golf ball, listen to music, have a drink and enjoy yourself with friends and family.' Accurate. It's basically a driving range with better lighting and worse decision-making potential. They're even launching cocktails named after him. Because nothing screams 'classy establishment' like drinks named after a guy who once golfed in a snakeskin jacket.
So, get ready for 'Daly Vibe' merchandise and late-night sessions with DJs. It's all about capturing that 'high-energy feeling' he brings. Which, for Daly, has always been less about the golf and more about the spectacle. And that, I suppose, is precisely why he and Topgolf are such a perfect, unsurprising fit. We all know how this ends: with a lot of people having fun and pretending they're getting better at golf.
