So, the bigwigs have decided East Potomac Golf Links, a public course that's been kicking around for a century, needs a serious facelift. And by facelift, they mean a $50 million, championship-style overhaul. Apparently, your casual $48 round just wasn't cutting it anymore. Now they want a 'World Class' venue. Because that’s exactly what the weekend warrior needs – a course tougher than his mother-in-law’s fruitcake.
Never mind that some judge tried to hit the brakes, slapping down plans to chop down over 400 trees. The administration, ever so cooperative, decided to appeal. Meanwhile, they’re telling everyone the course won't close on November 15th, right after the boss man himself posted it would. It’s all very straightforward. No confusion here.
In a related, and frankly more sensible, development, the National Links Trust is shifting focus. They’ve secured a new 50-year lease to manage Langston Golf Course and Rock Creek Park Golf. Good for them. Less drama, more playing. They can probably fix up those places without lawyers and presidential tweets.
We'll all be watching to see if this $50 million renovation truly turns East Potomac into a U.S. Open venue or just another monument to overspending. My money's on the latter. At least it’ll look nice in the brochures while you’re searching for your ball in the newly sculpted, championship-level rough.
