Detry's Got A Grip On The Open, Mostly

The Open Championship is lumbering along, or perhaps "un-murmuring" is a better word for its early stages, and wouldn't you know it, Thomas Detry has popped his head out of the Scottish mist. He’s leading the pack at a rather respectable two-under par. It’s not exactly the stuff of ancient legends, but it’s enough to get the golf nerds muttering into their lukewarm Bovril. And he’s not alone! Scotland’s own Robert MacIntyre is right there with him. This could be the start of a glorious Anglo-Scottish golfing alliance, or maybe they just both like playing in the damp.

Down below them, a veritable stampede of chasers is milling about at one-under. Their intentions are about as clear as a golf ball after ashanked drive into a heather bush. We’ve got Max Homa, Henrik Stenson, and Alex Fitzpatrick all huddled together, like a panicked United Nations delegation hoping to seize the moment with a flourish usually reserved for when the last biscuit is snatched. Watching their progress, or lack thereof, is always a treat because golf has this weird knack for showing you exactly how much we humans can strive and then spectacularly flail.

Sure, guys like Rickie Fowler and David Duval are hanging around, reminding us that past glories are sometimes just sad little footnotes to current struggles. But the real drama? That’s still brewing. We’re just witnessing the opening skirmishes, the pre-dinner nibbles before the main course. The fickle hand of fate, or more likely a rogue gust of wind that’s been practicing its dive-bombs, will surely shake up this whole delicate arrangement. Honestly, I’m hoping for more excitement than watching paint dry, or perhaps a particularly long parliamentary filibuster translated into golf.
