So, turns out you can beat Scottie Scheffler's college record at East Lake. Who knew? Preston Stout and Logan Reilly apparently did, both firing a ridiculous 7-under 65. What does this mean? It means they're pretty darn good. For college kids, anyway. They managed to one-up a record set by Scheffler back when his biggest worry was probably whether his dorm room had decent Wi-Fi. Progress, I guess.
Reilly, an Auburn sophomore, actually snagged the record first. Then Stout, an Oklahoma State senior and top-ranked amateur, matched it about thirty minutes later. He heard his playing partner racking up birdies and, instead of sweating it, decided to crash the party. Stout swore he wasn't looking at the scoreboard, but got updates from Josiah Gilbert, who apparently thought a constant stream of scorecards was the ultimate motivational tool. Thanks, Josiah. Real smooth.
Reilly, meanwhile, had a bit more flair on the 18th. He went for a risky shot, had a quick chat with his coaches, and somehow, somehow, pulled it off. Because that’s what you do when you’re chasing a record and trying not to make a complete fool of yourself. He still made par. Because that’s how these things usually go when you actually know what you’re doing.
And on the women's side, Arkansas's María José Marín also had a brilliant day, shooting a 5-under. She snagged her individual title, which is sweet, but her team is still trailing USC. It’s a team sport, after all. Winning the individual trophy is great, but it doesn’t always translate to the big team prize. We’ve all seen that movie before, and it usually ends with someone saying, "There's always next year."
