Port Royal Golf Course, that postcard-perfect slice of Bermuda, decided this past Friday that it was less a tropical vacation and more a very expensive, sun-drenched audition for purgatory. The Butterfield Bermuda Championship, which was supposed to be a golf party, turned into a rather brutal "who's out next?" game for a bunch of guys who thought they were safe.

Leading the charge of the unexpectedly vanquished was Adam Schenk, last year's champ. Turns out, the warm fuzzies from a trophy lift a year ago don't do squat when your golf ball decides it has a personal vendetta against the fairway. His heroic attempt to claw back from an opening 75 with a second-round 69 was noble, sure, like trying to plug a leak in the Titanic with a cocktail napkin. It was a valiant effort, and about as effective.

Schenck wasn't the only one suddenly demoted to spectator duty. Taylor Pendrith, Cameron Champ, Alejandro Tosti, and even the much-hyped Ben James all saw their dreams crumble against the unforgiving reality of a cut line set at a frankly brutal 5-under. You have to wonder if the course architects were trying to mirror the players’ increasingly tight wallets heading into the FedEx Cup Fall, or if they just really liked making people sweat.

Taylor Montgomery had a special kind of agony. After a solid opening 67, his hopes of playing the weekend were unceremoniously murdered by a bogey on his very last hole. It’s the kind of stuff you’d expect in a bad screenplay, only with more expensive golf shirts and less dramatic shouting. I can only imagine the quiet, internal screaming happening right about then.

These early departures aren't just a little golf boo-hoo. With the PGA Tour's 2027 eligibility rules starting to loom large, every missed FedEx Cup point feels like another chip taken from a rapidly dwindling pile. For these guys, fighting tooth and nail for their tour cards, missing a cut isn't just a professional inconvenience; it's a full-blown existential crisis about whether they even belong in this fancy golfing club.

Even young Ben James, whose arrival had the golf world buzzing, got his championship journey unceremoniously derailed. Rounds of 70 and 71 left him at a perfectly respectable 1-under, which, in Bermuda, apparently translates to "completely adrift, seven strokes from safety." Tough break, kid.

On a slightly more heartwarming note, Austin Lemieux, son of the legendary Mario, made his PGA Tour debut. He also missed the cut, naturally, but at least it was a family affair. One hopes his dad’s post-round advice was more "you'll get 'em next time" and less "did you try hitting it with a mushroom?"
